My name is Mike Slatnik, and I'm a third year medical student at the University of Western Ontario. I'm currently the National Officer of Global Health Education (NOGHE) for the Global Health Program of the Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS-GHP). Formerly part of the profile of the National Officer of Public Health, this new NOGHE position was created in March 2008 to serve the ongoing needs for standardized, comprehensive global health education in all Canadian medical schools.
Currently, the NOGHE works with external groups such as the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) Global Health Resource Group and the Global Health Education Consortium (GHEC) to develop global health education guidelines and implementation protocols that can be disseminated to medical schools. The NOGHE is also involved in organizing student-based advocacy around global health education. This position particularly focuses on the following objectives:
1. Ensuring that the AFMC-CFMS Global Health Resource documents on core competencies in global health education and pre-departure guidelines are in the process of implementation at every medical school. This is accomplished through collaboration with the chairs of the CFMS-GHP working groups on global health curriculum and pre-departure training.
2. Participating in drafting new competency and implementation documents, through collaboration with the AFMC-GHEC US-Canadian Joint Initiative on Global Health Education Standards.
3. Bringing a student voice to the creation of global health education tools and resources, through active participation on the Global Health Education Consortium (GHEC) Board of Directors and Student Advisory Committee.
4. Working closely with the National Officer of Partnership and the Global Health Mentorship Project to open new avenues of informal global health education for all medical students in Canada
